If you are willing to enrol into one of them, you will need a study permit. Here is your guide on how to apply and get an Italy Student Visa to Study Abroad.
Depending on how long you plan to stay in Italy and what you will study, you need to apply for one of the following visa types:
Italy Student Visa Types:
There are two types of Italy Student Visa basis the duration of your study program in Italy. The names of the Visas tell the story, and it is very easy to understand which one of them will be required for your program. Here are the types of Visa:
Type C Short Term Italy Student Visa: For Language Courses Less than 90 days
Type D Long Stay National Visa: Full Time Courses which are for 80 hours a month

These are basic conditions you are needed to fulfil to apply for the student visa in Italy:
- A Valid Passport
- Travelling Documents (Flight Itinerary)
- No Criminal Record
- No Prior Rejection from entering the country
How to Apply for Italy Student Visa?
Usually, it takes about two month’s time for the study visa processing. It is always advisable to start the application process for Visa in Italy at least three months before your semester starts. You should apply for Italy Student Visa at Italian embassy in country. Students are asked for the visa interview at the consulate or embassy. You should schedule the interview at least 1-1.5 months in advance.
As the language requirements are mandatory at Universities in Italy, the embassy will not ask for any specific proof of Language proficiency. However, a basic knowledge of Italian Language can go a long way.
To apply for Italy Student Visa, you will also need some documents and proofs. Here is the list of all the documents required for visa:
- Acceptance Letter from University in Italy
- Passport size photographs
- A passport that is valid for at least three months after your study in Italy ends
- Proof of Residence
- Monetary Funds to sustain yourself in Italy during your stay (900 euros a month)
- A Valid healthcare Insurance
- Certificates and Degrees of previous education
- Proof of payment of Visa Application Fee (50 Euros)
Residence Permit in Italy:
Non EU Students:
For a Resident Permit to stay in Italy, you are required to apply for one at the nearest Questura (a police station) in eight days of your arrival in Italy. You will require some documents to apply for:
- Your Passport
- Health Insurance Proof
- Italy Student Visa
- A statement saying that your program will take place in Italy
- Passport size photographs
For EU Students, the requirement is declaration of presence, and you will have to apply at a Questura, too.
Work Permit in Italy and its Conditions:
Non-EU students:
For Non-EU students, there is an application process. You have to go to local immigration office in Italy and apply for work permit. Before applying for work permit, you are required to have a job offer, a signed employment agreement to show.
If you are an EU student, then you do not require a separate work permit. For both EU and Non-EU students, the part time work limit is 20 hours a week during the semesters.
